Education is reserved by the Constitution for the States, as it is NOT an enumerated duty of the Federal Government in that document. Establishment of DOE was perhaps a noble idea in some bureaucrats' minds, but it has since proven to be a disaster for the public school system. Local school boards are the most capable of determining what they want their children to learn; that way it is far less likely to be government propaganda as is the situation now. Ask any 12th grader now what were the Great Books (do YOU know what they were?) and I'll pretty much guarantee that they won't have a clue as to what you're talking about! I attended public schools in Florida in the 40's and 50's, and we were taught ancient history and literature as well as world and US history right on up to the current decade or so (the end of WWII and Korean War).Apr 18th, 2017Dorothy M. from Bakersfield, CA writes:
The Department of Education is a disgrace. Get rid of it ASAP. December 2018 is too long to wait. Make it December 2017.REPORT COMMENTS

As an older retired elementary teacher for over 20 years and an elementary principal for over 20 years, I recall how we as educators could work with our Texas Education system and have influence over the educational programs available to use in our local schools. That is unfortunately now no longer a possibility.REPORT COMMENTS

As an educator, I strongly encourage you comply with the citizens in your district who understand their children's needs and interest as they relate directly to their own and not necessarily to those of the federal government. Our founding fathers only permitted the Federal Government to act to protect and defend the USA, not spoon feed us every policy for every area of our life.REPORT COMMENTS
